Publishing let-down!Review date: 2009-08-24 Rating: 4 out of 10I have no criticisms of the authors' contributions to the 'technical' content but agree that the editing and publishing are a let-down.
It is unbelievable that - in a book which one believes will become a compelling reference book because of its content - such a shoddy presentation should be made of so many of the images. The cover contains photos in glorious colour which inside are in black and white...Why? Why also are many of the other photos reproduced in black & white when the originals were clearly in colour? Similarly, many diagrams could have been illustrated in colour - for example I have seen some similar to that on page 482 portrayed elsewhere in colour.
Would the use colour have added so significantly to the production costs that the price would have become prohibitive? In my view...NO - not for a reference book of this undoubted quality of content.
I wrote to the publishers months ago to invite them to comment on what I intended to say - I never received a reply or an acknowledgement. Mind you I had bought the book by then!
So well done Bob et al but what a pity New Holland Publishers (UK) Ltd did not rise to the occasion.Woolmer badly let down by editor and publisherReview date: 2009-06-01 Rating: 4 out of 10A golden rule of batting is "go forward or back" ... don't get caught on the crease. This book is caught between being a manual for juniors (e.g. how to play the pull shot) and advanced insights for the experienced club cricketer or aspiring pro. There are many basic guides to cricket. What makes Woolmer valuable is the lessons he learnt at the top, as a professional, Test-level coach.
Woolmer died at some point in the book-writing process. What was needed was a clear editorial policy to focus on what would make this book unique - Woolmer's advanced insights. But the publisher was too timid to take a stand. The result is a 654-page mish-mash that is physically too heavy to hold and serves neither junior nor experienced cricketer adequately.
There is also an editorial hideous-ness that runs through the book: a paragraph will start talking about Woolmer in the third person (written by an editor) and then run on into Woolmer's own text. Just plain ugly. A simple visual device could let the reader know who is speaking. Again, poor editing and poor publishing oversight. -AG, weekend cricketer, author: Future Savvy: Identifying Trends to Make Better Decisions, Manage Uncertainty, and Profit from ChangeCrackingReview date: 2009-03-31 Rating: 10 out of 10I would recommend this book to anyone that is thinking about playing cricket, plays cricket or coaches cricket. It is an absolute marvel. It contains everything from mental strength for playing the game and covers all techniques for batsmen, bowlers and fielders. Excellently layed out and explained, Bob Woolmer's cricketing mind is illustrated for all to see and benefit from. If you are a cricket nut this is the book for you.Quite simply, the best cricket coaching book ever written.Review date: 2009-02-27 Rating: 10 out of 10There is so much wisdom in every page. I only wish I'd had a copy twenty-five years ago before my knees went and I could still see the ball. If you play cricket get this book now!
