I like this book.Review date: 2009-12-18 Rating: 10 out of 10I like this book. Bumble likes it too - but it's not just about cricket (although there is plenty of that between the covers). It's a witty, pithy book about friendship, obsession and that pecullar gift the English have for eccentric behaviour. A perfect gift for the cricketing buff or for those who hanker after an insight into The English (with a dash of Dylan for good measure).More Than Amusing...........Review date: 2009-12-16 Rating: 10 out of 10I was given this book for my birthday and could not put it down. If a cleverer, funnier more ironic book has been written about the grace and charm of village cricket I hope I read it soon. All of cricketing life is hereReview date: 2009-12-06 Rating: 10 out of 10This is a fantastic little book and one any cricket lover will be delighted to read.
The blend of anecdotes from the author's own experience and the wider, more well known cricketing world helps to keep up the pace and ensure that the next smile is never far away; be it from a familiar story re-visited, a new gem from the beloved game to be treasured, or simply the gentle, resigned humour of the put-upon captain of a taverner's team.
Anyone who has played cricket at such a low level will find much to identify with here; at times it was almost as if the author and I were part of the same team, so recognisable were the tales of last minute cry-offs, cricket impaired (or enhanced) by a hangover and controversial LBWs. The skill is to make entertainment from these common experiences, something which this book does with aplomb.
Highly recommended!Short, rambling, funny only in placesReview date: 2009-11-21 Rating: 4 out of 10Being a cricket addict, I was looking forward to reading this book, especially after the intro by "Bumble" David Lloyd. Regrettably, I was disappointed. This is not the funniest cricket book by far and nor is it the longest, in fact, it's disappointingly short.
The author reminisces about the generalities of cricket, umpires, dodgy players, pitches and weather and takes a pot at wives & girlfriends who don't understand.
At the end of the book I felt quite disappointed that there was little about the author's exploits and too much rambling about international cricket - the sort of banter that goes on in the pub after most cricket matches. It's also far too short to be value for money, sort of Harry Thompson light.
