Penguins Stopped PlayReview date: 2009-09-24 Rating: 10 out of 10Very funny book. The author, Harry Thompson has caught the flavour of a much travelled village cricket team who not only love their cricket, but also a drop of the 'hard stuff'. The encounters with various women and the situations that arise due to a number of admin. 'cock ups' are hilarious.
This book is highly recommended even if you are not a cricket fan.
Rest in peace Harry.Batter-sweetReview date: 2009-06-19 Rating: 8 out of 10It's rather mixed emotions I have after finishing this book on the train this morning. Cricket is probably the game I have spent the longest playing in my life and I have enjoyed most of that (apart from being out). Reading Harry Thompson's book brought memories flooding back and it was amusing that I could easily transpose his team into those I had played for and vice-versa.
It is an easy read and pretty funny although I did wonder whether the sledging of BA was totally necessary or true - but that apart it was highly entertaining (even the BA bit was!).
I think it would certainly help to have an understanding of the game, better still to have played it a bit.
Why mixed emotions? Well without wishing to give it away - read the last two chapters and you will see why - if you didn't know already (I did) then it might be a bit of a sad shock to you.
If you have any interest in cricket you should read thisReview date: 2009-05-15 Rating: 10 out of 10This book is sharply observed and extremely funny. A close look at the world of club amateur cricket. As someone who has played cricket for over 30 years and toured with several sides, I found this book spot on, especially the players who are 99% certain to come on the tour but never, ever make it. If you've ever played cricket at any level then you will relate to this book, if you've ever been on a cricket tour then it's even better.
Thompson not only talks cricket but also the personalities involved and the difficulties of managing to get 11 players plus kit in the same location at the same time (and possibly on another continent). I don't know about tickling it to deep fine leg but this book tickled me.
The book is written in a friendly and accessible manner and is a good read for when you need to sit back and relax - like when it's raining at Headingley....
Strongly recommended for all cricket fans.Great fun!Review date: 2009-03-24 Rating: 10 out of 10If you've ever wondered quite what it is that makes grown men (and women) take up the strange and absorbing game that is cricket, then this book might go some way towards answering the question. All the passion, joys and frustrations of trying to keep an amateur side together against all the odds are explored as Harry Thompson takes his (sometimes reluctant, sometimes downright bizarre) merry band of cricketers on a somewhat unlikely world tour which leads them through various surprising and life-affirming experiences, despite the best efforts of British Airways to put as many spanners in the works as they possibly can. This is a wonderfully witty and entertaining book, which might open the eyes of anyone who just doesn't understand what people see in the game of cricket, but the ending will break your heart.
